About the Study

Cardiovascular disease risk factors, age-of-onset and response to treatment can vary by ancestry. However, medical guidelines on heart disease prevention and treatment are based on data from mostly people of European ancestry. South Asians make up almost 25% of the world’s population, but less than 2% of genetic research participants. Greater representation of diverse communities in research will help us reduce health inequity.

The South Asian Genes and Health in Australia Study (SAGHA) aims to increase representation of Australian South Asians in genomic and health research.

What is the SAGHA Study?

A study developed hand-in-hand with the South Asian Community

The SAGHA Study has been developed through discussions with members from the QLD South Asian community to develop guidelines for doing health and genetic research that are respectful of South Asian culture.

The first genetics and health study on Australian South Asians

By doing research using data from this population, our vision is better health and healthcare for future generations of Australian South Asians.

Assess heart disease risk in the QLD South Asian population

Our pilot study will look at heart disease risk in 200 South Asians living in Queensland. This will involve collecting a DNA sample and information on their health.
